(Lost in Budapest)
One of the advantages of coming to study in Milano would definitely be the geographical location of the city, enabling me to travel around Europe within arms length.
And my first excursion outside of Italy was Budapest in Hungary.
My impressions toward Budapest was mostly perceived through the fiction novel, "The Historian."
I rarely read, since I am not one of those culturally intellectual beings,
however since I am fascinated with all topics related to Vampires,
I felt obliged to finish reading this best-seller.
And I was more than glad that I did read it after all,
because asides from the dramatic elements and historical events related to dracula,
this book has helped me visualize the landscapes of rather exotic cities such as Istanbul, Budapest and Sofia (and I really want to visit them all!).
DAY 1: THE MIDNIGHT OVERTURE
We arrived at Budapest in the midnight; my Russian classmate and I took a cab into the city.
This trip was pretty much impromptus, asides from knowing I will have a place to stay for 2 nights and a ticket to get back to Milan, everything was just going to be imrpovised as the time goes by.
(airbnb link: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/868167)
My classmate rented an amazing apartment on Airbnb, which is located in a very nice area in the city.
The building comes off as very historcal and gloomy, but the interior of the hallways are just amazingly beautiful; the apartment itself is modern, warm, and cozy.
Desserted in absolute solitude, one could feel how time has stopped within such an environment.
Our first stop was Simpla, an almost "debri-like" building of bars, cafes and hookah bars; it's more or like a bazzar of nightlife.
A large open space inside.
Traditional shots─Unicum, supposedly tastes like a stronger version of Jaeger Bomb...
Not so yummy...
Day 1-2: CATCHING LIGHT
The weather in Milano before departuring was horrible, rainy and gloomy; at least Budapest showed us som hospitality.
We returned to the apartment app. 3am in the morning, I showered and slept at 4am, however sadly, I still managed to wake up at 8 ish.
Since another girl also woke up, we chit-chatted a bit and I suggested that we make some coffee to help wake ourselves up for the day.
I took up the Moka pot and put in water along with the coffee powder,
didn't think much and just put it on the stove while lighting up the fire.
After about 10 seconds, we started to realize the fire got big and a nasty smell spreaded out;
suddenly we saw the Moka pot on fire, and the bottom of the pot was MELTING!!!!!
So what I did was I actually put an electronic Moka pot with a plastic base burning on a stove.
Conclusion: Drunk and people who don't sleep enough should refrain from making coffee in the morning.
Long time no see dear Starbucks.
Wouldn't imagine that seeing Starbucks and hearing the baristas speak English would give me a sense of home.
Whenever visiting a church or touristy building, I would go up to the top so I could take pictures of the city.
I liked how this church wasn't that tall so there were no metal windows blocking the view, making it easier to take pictures.
The bridge that sits on the Duna river, connecting Buda and Pest. Walking through it was one of the most horrible experiences I have ever had.
SO SO excruciatingly cold with the wind.
One of the streets we first encountered after stepping onto the Buda side. It was a busy line of cars forming an oddly "ordered" moment at the redlight.
Is there always a shortcut to achieve a certain height?
The Buda Palace is now a museum.
They actually provided blankets for their patrons. Milano should follow suit LOL!
The girls in this trip.
On our way back to to apartment and took random photos of stores; I really think the city has a nice aesthetic and is full of interesting visual designs.
Day 1-3: MOSAIK
An interesting cafe that has graffiti all over the place. People just take up a piece of chalk and write whatever on any place they can see.
Though it claims to be a cake, it seems to be just layers of ultra-soft toast with caramel filling and nuts sprinkled on it.
Day 1-3: SPOONING SOME DINNER
So for the evening we went to a boat restaurant sitting on the Duna river.
It is a classy restaurant, though we were on "budget travel" but it was still nice to splur a bit.
The color scheme is really cute and girly for the entree. This was fois gras.
Goulish in soup form.
Goulish in stew form.
The dessert definitely reminded me of thanksgiving; sweet pumpkin puree mousse with roasted apple and cidar.
Checked out a club for the night; must say that Sony RX-100 did not let me down :)
Day 2: LONELY ISLAND
This morning was not so productive since we were walking around looking for food as breakfast.
However I lost myself after a small detour, and couldn't reach anyone through phone (which makes sense when we are all using Italian telecom system service -> so ITALIAN!!!!).
after walking around at the church for a good 30 mins not being able to find the girls,
I just decided to go explore the other parts of the city.
Because someone told me that club island was interesting, so I decided to walk towards that direction.
I walked by the congress but too bad it was under maintenance, and I couldn't remove the ugly fences out of the frame I wanted.
On the left-hand side of below picture is where the club island is located. Though titled as "Club Island," it really has nothing to do with night clubs, but in fact is named in such way presumably due to the sports club located on the island. In a sense, the island is really just a huge foresty park sitting between Buda and Pest over the Duna river. More or less like the Budapest version of Central Park?
Eventually I got bored of the island and walked back to main street trying to find my way back.
During the meantime I was able to get in contact with one of the girls, and went to meet up with them;
they did a segway tour of the city which I thought was really cute and fun so I was a bit sad I missed out the tour.
Nevertheless, for the first time being entirely alone in a city with no plan or not knowing a direction,
I wasn't panicking or frustrated; I tried to not think about it and not be afraid of the situation.
Being "Lost in Budapest" probably was one of the most rewarding experiences throughout the trip.
